Carl's first solo album was done during a break from the rest of the band, when he felt that the Beach Boys were not expanding creatively. The sound of the first four tracks of this album is certainl different to the Beach Boys of that era, being an 80s R&B sound, but they tread a turgid, repetitive groove that do little to enhance Carl's reputation. The second half is better, with the standout being Heaven, a ballad that has enhanced more than a few weddings. This moment of magic somewhat redeeems the album, but it is still in the more disappointing half of Beach Boys and related product.
