6a. When was this site opened?

In late 1995. It was one of the earlier fan sites for Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Much of the site was developed in late 1995 and the first half of 1996.

6b. Does it have any official connection to Brian Wilson?

No. The owners and those involved in updating and adminstering this site have no official connections to Brian Wilson at all. This is simply a fan site. We hope that this site will be one of the ways in which Brian will get the recognition he deserves.

6c. Who is responsible for the content of this site?

Mike Wheeler set up much of the early content of the site, and many of the original scripts which the site uses. Susan Lang and Andrew Gladwin are the people currently involved in maintaining and developing the site. A lot of the information on the site was submitted by fans from all over the world, and they are credited in the appropriate sections.

We would like to encourage people to contribute to the on-going development and maintenance of this site as a prime Brian Wilson resource. There are some sections that do need constant updating, and new material is always welcome. If you are interested, please e-mail us atcabinessencequestions@hotmail.com

6d. What is the purpose of the webboard?

The webboard is a means for fans of Brian Wilson to communicate with each other, learn and discuss issues. We encourage newcomers to participate. A number of acknowledged experts on Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys do post on the webboard regularly, as well as people who have had close connections to Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. You need to register for the webboard, if you wish to post on it.

6e. What guidelines are there for posting on the webboard?

The overall guideline for posting on the webboard is that people should be allowed to freely express their opinions, but with this freedom, one also has some responsibilities. These responsibilities include

  1. respect for other posters: This is the critical issue. Brian Wilson fans come from a wide variety of backgrounds and can even have very different musical tastes. People must be able to discuss their differences, however there is never a need to attack another poster personally.
  2. respect for Brian Wilson: This is a Brian Wilson fan site. Posters may like very different aspects of Brian's music, but people who dislike Brian as a musician or a person are not likely to enjoy posting to this webboard. The website is meant to a tribute to Brian, and something he would enjoy if he ever did look at it.
  3. a little bit of knowledge: As mentioned above, we do encourage new fans to post. The only request we have for these fans is that they do take the trouble to pick up some basic facts. One read through this FAQ should be sufficient.
  4. no offensive posts: This website is not R18, and posters should be aware of the overall audience of the site. This doesn't mean avoiding issues such as sex altogether, it simply means that there is no place for sexually explicit posts. Racially offensive posting is also not appropriate. We feel most posters have a good judgement of what would be appropriate, and what wouldn't be.

The administrators of the webboard will delete any post where we feel the freedom of speech has been abused. If you are unhappy about a deletion, e-mail us at cabinessence23@hotmail.com, rather than clog the board up with a big discussion about the deletion.

6f. What can you tell me about the chat on this site?

The chat opened in April 1996 as a place for Brian Wilson fans to meet on-line and chat about Brian and the Beach Boys. Mike Wheeler wrote the original script, and it has developed into one of the best web-based chat scripts available. Over time, a number of great friendships have been made using the chat.

Not everyone using the chat is a big Brian Wilson/Beach Boys fan and users of the chat should respect that. However we would like to see more fans using the chat. There is a specific room for Brian Wilson discussion (you enter the chat in the "lobby" which is a general meeting place.)

In general, the same principles apply to users of the chat than to posts on the webboard. However, you can also use the "ignore" function on the chat to avoid getting any posts from someone who you find offensive, or simply don't want to chat to. There is full documentation on how to use the chat which can be accessed using the "help" function.

6g. Whom do I e-mail if I have a question?

If you have a question about the site i.e. missing links, factual errors, suggestions, e-mail us at cabinessencequestions@hotmail.com. If you have a question about the Beach Boys or Brian Wilson, I suggest asking it on the message board to get the collective wisdom of many fans. You are also welcome to e-mail the site admins atcabinessencequestions@hotmail.com. However, please do not ask us how to get hold of a bootleg!

6h. Are you on Facebook and Twitter?

Indeed we are. Our Facebook is presence is at http://www.facebook.com/cabinwebpage and Twitter at https://twitter.com/#!/surfermoon.
